| 2 medium onions, sliced | | | | 1/2 cup cocoa powder--fill with boiling water to make |

| 1 1/2 cups water | | | | 1 cup sugar |
| 2 tsps salt | | | | 2 eggs |
| 1/2 tsp black pepper | | | | 1 tbsp lard or shortening |
| 1 bay leaf | | | | 1 cup sour cream |
| 1 1/2 tsps caraway seed | | | | 1 tsp soda |
| 1/4 cup vinegar | | | | 1 tsp baking powder |
| 1 medium head red cabbage, cut into wedges | | | | 2 cups flour |
